Description
A Great Blue Heron Touch Down by Dale Kauzlaric -- I went to a backwater area of Lake Wausau in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin. When I got there, there were 5 great blue herons wading and fishing. Another couple came in, including this one. Herons in flight are very graceful. Normally they fly with their head tucked in an S shape. But when they are near landing, they will extend their necks, as this one did. To feed they wade with their long legs, looking for minnows, fish, frogs, etc. They will stand motionless and then strikes like a snake at prey. In the spring, their plumage is quite striking. They have those long blue-gray feathers over their back as shown here just as it touch down in the water. The feathers on this heron are a total mess as it lands. -- dalekphotography.com
