Description
Golden Crepuscular Rays Over Lake Wausau by Dale Kauzlaric -- On this day, we had storms rolling through the state. I looked on the radar about an hour and a half before sunset and two red cells had popped up to the south, heading north. I went out to see if I could get some shots. As I got to the main drag, I could see the sky to the northwest had some colors to the northwest and only gray clouds to the south. Then there was a change of plans. I went and sat on Lake Wausau in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin and glad I did. The sun never shined and was always behind the clouds, but it made for an interesting sunset nonetheless. As the sunset progressed, visible golden rays made an appearance. These types of rays are called “crepuscular" because they appear at dawn and dusk when the Sun is rising or setting. These particular rays are the typical crepuscular rays because they appear in the sky where the Sun is. Crepuscular rays are near-parallel, but appear to converge at the solar point due to an optical illusion from linear perspective. It’s similar to a long, straight road converging toward the horizon regardless of which way one is looking. -- dalekphotography.com
