Description
Lesser Scaup Hen And Escorts by Dale Kauzlaric -- These lesser scaup were enjoying spring on Lake Wausau near Wausau in Marathon County, Wisconsin. They were very active feeding, diving and surfacing repeatedly. They will feed on minnow, snails, clams, insect larvae, etc. It is commonly called the little bluebill or broadbill because of its distinctive blue bill. The lesser scaup is often hard to differentiate from a greater scaup, besides its smaller size. You can tell the difference between a lesser and a greater bluebill by the color and shape of the head. The lesser will have a dull purple color, while the greater will have a green color. The head of a lesser can be slightly pointed towards the back, while a greater will have more of a domed head. They were in mating mode, as at one point this hen had 6 drakes around her. They are a migratory duck, as they are only seen here in spring heading north to Canada and in late fall going to Central America. -- dalekphotography.com
