Description
Osprey Hovering by Dale Kauzlaric -- I went to a backwater area of Lake Wausau in Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin. When I got there, there were 5 great blue herons wading and fishing. After I was there for a while, I caught movement over my head. I looked up to see this osprey hovering in the air. It was looking over the water for fish. It eventually moved off and then it dove, talons first and picked up a fish. It is pretty cool when they get in the air after diving and shake to get rid of water. When they catch a fish, they will turn the fish head first, to make themselves more aerodynamic.
Ospreys have slender bodies with narrow wings that appear to be long in relation to their body. The length of the wings and the characteristic bend in the wings make identifying ospreys easy from other hawks. Another unusual characteristic of the osprey is there technique of hovering looking for fish. These raptors are strictly a fish eater. Ospreys can live 15 to 20 years in the wild. Their nest is built of sticks and will often build a nest on a manmade structure or platforms on poles. They will also nest in dead trees. -- dalekphotography.com
