Boot Creek Red Aurora Silhouettes by Dale Kauzlaric -- I went to Boot Creek near Eagle River in Vilas County, Wisconsin. to shoot the aurora. It was cloudy all day and I had to wait for the clouds to move out. At first, there was a green band on the northern horizon. After a little while, the rare red aurora lit up the northern sky. The clouds started to move in again and I had to call it a night. As I walked out, I turned around and had to take one last image with all the silhouettes.
The aurora borealis or northern lights is a colored light display that is visible in the night sky, usually only around the earth’s poles. It occurs when charged particles are emitted from the Sun and ride the solar wind. The particles can be emitted by coronal mass ejection or solar flares. As a Wisconsin-based photographer and having grown up in Vilas County with its over 1,300 lakes, the outdoors runs through my veins. Through the 40 years of chasing images with a camera, landscape photography is my favorite, particularly landscapes with water, any kind of water. Colorful sunrises and sunsets can be captivating. Shooting after the sun goes down can yield amazing images. Waterfowl or other wildlife can provide quite the challenge to get up close in their natural settings. Someone left a comment on one of my sunset images about capturing the colors the master painter provided. I guess that would sum up what I try to do, that is to capture that opportunity that God provides and share it to the best of my ability by telling...
