Description
Drake Bufflehead Stretch by Dale Kauzlaric -- A drake bufflehead was showing off his springtime plumage with a wing stretch on Lake Wausau near Wausau in Marathon County, Wisconsin. The bufflehead is the smallest diving or sea duck in North America. This small duck dives to feed. On this day, there were a lot of divers on the lake feeding. They almost spend as much time under the water, as they do on the water. They almost look black and white, but when you see them up close, their heads have the green and purple iridescence in the sun. As with a lot of divers, they are a cavity nester. With their small size, they can often use a woodpecker hole in a tree. Buffleheads breed from southern Alaska through the forested areas of western Canada, central Ontario and eastern Quebec. -- dalekphotography.com
