Flames In The Big Dipper by Dale Kauzlaric -- The data was indicating the aurora borealis or northern lights had a chance of appearing, so I went out northeast to the Ackley Wildlife Area located near Antigo, in Langlade County, Wisconsin. I tried to find a spot with a unobstructed north view. This was a new area I had not been to before, but I found a spot I liked. Here a channel was froze over already, but it would give me my reflection. As I was getting set up, the intensity of the glow grew. The aurora intensified quickly. The show included waves and pillars of light. Here the pillars look like flames in the Big Dipper.

As a Wisconsin-based photographer and having grown up in Vilas County with its over 1,300 lakes, the outdoors runs through my veins. Through the 40 years of chasing images with a camera, landscape photography is my favorite, particularly landscapes with water, any kind of water. Colorful sunrises and sunsets can be captivating. Shooting after the sun goes down can yield amazing images. Waterfowl or other wildlife can provide quite the challenge to get up close in their natural settings. Someone left a comment on one of my sunset images about capturing the colors the master painter provided. I guess that would sum up what I try to do, that is to capture that opportunity that God provides and share it to the best of my ability by telling...
