Description
Light Pillars From Rib Mountain State Park by Dale Kauzlaric -- I went to Rib Mountain State Park last night to see what I could find in the night sky. First off, the lights at Granite Peak, the local ski hill, were off. The city lights were really bright. I went up the observation tower. It was pretty chilly up there, low 20s with a breeze out of the south. You can sure feel it when you are above the trees. As I was shooting, the barred owls were hooting and a pack of coyotes to the southwest were howling. I eventually got to looking to the southwest, as in this view. Orion's Belt and Sirius (our brightest star) were in plain view in this direction. When I reviewed the images in the back of the camera, I could see these light pillars showing up. I think the brighter lights would be Marshfield and the lights to the right would be Stratford. I am not big on light pollution from city lights, but it sure makes for an interesting image here. Now, these are from city lights shining upward and the ice crystals in the air being illuminated. Sirius, the brightest star in earth's sky, can be seen left of Orion's Belt. Sirius is also called the "Dog Star" because it is part of the constellation Canis Major. -- dalekphotography.com
