Description
Blackberry Blossoms And Brambles by Dale Kauzlaric -- These blackberry blossoms were found east of Wausau in Marathon County, Wisconsin. Blackberries are an edible bramble fruit supported on long canes. Blackberries are perennial plants which typically bear biennial canes from the perennial root system. Blackberry canes can be 6 feet long or more. The first year canes or primocane, grow to their full length with large leaves and does not produce any flowers. The second year canes or floricanes produce the blossoms. Blossoms have five white or pale pink petals. The blossoms are pollinated by bees as seen here. The plants are typically protected with prickles, which are called thorns or pickers. These prickles are tough and can even tear through denim as you go through the brambles. It can be a battle to pick in the fall and you take the wear and tear. The berries start out green, then turn red and finally black or deep purple when ripe. Blackberries are used to make jam, jelly, pies and wine. -- dalekphotography.com
