Boot Lake Green Aurora by Dale Kauzlaric -- The data was indicating the northern lights had a chance of appearing, so I went out to Boot Lake north of Eagle River, in Vilas County, Wisconsin. When I got to the lake and walked to the shoreline, I could see the clouds to the north were backlit with the aurora. It was easy to see with the naked eyes. The green glow also had pillars moving from right to left. The sky was partly cloudy, adding to the dramatic nighttime sky.
The aurora borealis or northern lights is a colored light display that is visible in the night sky, usually only around the earth’s poles. It occurs when charged particles are emitted from the Sun and ride the solar wind. The particles can be emitted by coronal mass ejection or solar flares. Only particles directed in earth’s direction can be seen in the aurora. These particles are drawn by earth's magnetic field to both polar regions. As a Wisconsin-based photographer and having grown up in Vilas County with its over 1,300 lakes, the outdoors runs through my veins. Through the 40 years of chasing images with a camera, landscape photography is my favorite, particularly landscapes with water, any kind of water. Colorful sunrises and sunsets can be captivating. Shooting after the sun goes down can yield amazing images. Waterfowl or other wildlife can provide quite the challenge to get up close in their natural settings. Someone left a comment on one of my sunset images about capturing the colors the master painter provided. I guess that would sum up what I try to do, that is to capture that opportunity that God provides and share it to the best of my ability by telling...
