Wisconsin River Headwaters by Dale Kauzlaric -- Here is the headwaters of the Wisconsin River near Land O Lakes in Vilas County, Wisconsin, just a couple of miles from its outflow at the southwest corner of Lac Vieux Desert. Lac Vieux Desert is a large lake straddling the Wisconsin - Michigan border. The narrow Wisconsin River starts here and flows almost 300 miles to its confluence with the Mississippi River. On its journey to the Mississippi, there are nearly 50 dams on it and that's why it is often called the hardest working river in America.
